I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. S (I’ll omit his name for anonymity), a well established and worldly scientist and researcher of cell biology, immunology, rheumotology… the list goes on. He opened up my eyes to some fundamental facts about health that I have previously not considered. The conversation we had was mostly about natural cures. If you’re into personal development and being healthy than surely you see the value of a natural cure over the pharmaceutical cure.

The topics that I found of most interest were the properties of garlic as an anti-biotic, oregano oil as an anti-fungal, and omega-3 fatty acids as something lacking-absent from American diets today. I will try to spare you as much as I can from scientific jargon and give you pure unadulterated gems of information.

Garlic

Garlic can be used to prevent and cure most things from a common bacterial infection to the deadly [1] anthrax bacterium. The active ingredients of garlic are present only in the fresh form of garlic. Cooking garlic or taking garlic powder removes the effect of this component, which is the same part responsible for the pungent odor. The best way to use garlic is orally (as opposed to topically which you can do with oregano oil bellow).

Many anti-biotics have been abused in the farming of animals to increase their growth rate which directly caused the resistance of the bacteria to these drugs. The special thing about garlic is that it’s anti-bacterial properties have no known resistance.

So, garlic will ward off these bugs and possibly any dates you might have lined up. Personal recommendation: have you and your ‘partner’ use the garlic at the same time to prevent tension from the unpleasant garlic breath ;)

Oregano oil

Oregano oil is a very potent anti-fungal agent and cures infections such as athletes foot to more serious gastrointestinal problems. You can get the stuff at a farmer’s market and it’s so inexpensive you cannot even begin to compare costs to anti-fungal medication. That’s pretty much it on oregano oil, consume it once in awhile and google if you want more info. Just beware of all the marketing and products that will come up. You don’t need all those fancy oils that are out there, just get the cheap, raw, natural stuff… it works the best.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids used to be in abundance. Between fish being more natural and less toxic and farm animals fed left-overs and having fish in their diets at least once a week there was plenty of this and other nutrients going around. There is a lack of omega-3 in the American diet and some of the effects linked to this deficiency are:

  • Autism
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • and [2] many more

These days our fish and omega-3 are available to us through 3 methods:

  1. A lot of fish are created on fish farms where the fish are fed corn products to keep costs down. Unfortunately these fish produce no omega-3 fatty acids and are not beneficial for us here.
  2. The other type of fish is from the open sea, which has the downside of being raised in an environment with toxic dumps and mercury accumulation.
  3. Fortunately there is a third type of way to get omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. S recommends the brand Martek because of their unique preparation methods. This company uses fermentation to produce the omega-3 so what you are essentially getting is the pure product, exactly what you need. You can buy it from [3] Martek directly or search out a cheaper source.



The recommended dosage is to take 100-200mg a day for 8 weeks straight. This omega-3 accumulates in your body and you have a good reserve for 6 months at which point you would repeat the process. Some companies will have you taking up to 6 pills a day just so you buy more of their product, this isn’t necessary. You always want to put in exactly what your body needs, not more, not less. You may also find omega-3 meat and poultry at the supermarket for three times the price. This is unnecessary as you could buy the regular meat and supplement with one of these natural pills for a lot less money.
