Environmental Wellness Principle

This article is part of a joint effort to increase environmental awareness. It also marks the first annual blog action day. To see what everyone else is writing about the environment today, you can browse the blog action day [1] website.

At first I wasn’t sure where I would go with an environmental article. That’s because there are already countless articles listing practical tips about what you can do. It’s pretty simple to find them via search engine. I didn’t want to add to the clutter, but I did want to make a positive impact on the environment through my writing today.

Environmental Wellness Principle (EWP)

The environmental wellness principle is a term that I’m going to coin right now. If you aren’t benefiting the environment, you’re harming it. It’s as simple as that. If you’re reading this, you have internet access, which means you know, or can easily find out, many ways to be environmentally friendly. The only thing that remains is to choose benefit over harm.

Let’s look at a few basic examples:

  • Instead of throwing your empty soda can out of your car window, and almost hitting the car behind you (no, i’m not venting!), you could kindly choose to recycle this item at your earliest convenience. Perhaps keep a trash bag in your car!
  • Turn off electrical appliances whenever you aren’t using them.
  • If something is broken, try fixing it first, even though replacing it might be easier.

The beauty is that once you can train yourself to think in this way, you can apply it to just about anything. Think in terms of “you’re either with us, or against us“. Make the right decision.
