Thanks for the good ideas here.

In response to your final point, I agree that work does tend to dominate people's lives inappropriately, however I would feel pretty unfulfilled if I worked only (or even mostly) to make money to support my family.

I choose work that stimulates my mind, allows me to contribute to society/improve the lives of others and fulfills me in other ways. Having an interesting, meaningful job actually makes me more enjoyable for my family and friends to be around when I come home.

Balance is the key: work and life.

I love No 6.
Something I am working on and find it often a challenge to not get distracted by some of those bright shiny objects that float around my computer screen. i have just ventured off on one of those from you last post on Meditation- it;s okay well worthwhile.

A question a friend of mine says I should ask more often to stay on track is- How does this move me towards my ideal situation. another is will this make me money today?

Thanks for your questioning posts.

Number 5 rings true. In fact, I'm glad someone else has brought this up. I have a hard time on negative dwelling, and I've thought to myself plenty of times, "I bet they're not at home right now thinking about all of this... they're probably enjoying their weekend."

Alex,

Another time related problem is not keeping track of

 1) How much time am I spending on activities that lead me towards my short/long term goals
 2) What activities are leading me away from reaching my short/long term goals
 3) make commitment to focus more on 1 and defocus on 2.

I agree that work/home commute is the biggest offender, and we recently moved very close to work. I went from an hour and half commute to a 10-15 minute commute max. It's grand.

Personally, I think the largest time waster is the work / home commute.

That is something that is going to have to change in our society. As gasoline becomes more expensive and we require more productivity from workers, we are going to have to find a way to work from our homes or at least work while we're on the road.

When you say, live closer to your work, that is not always an option. Many mid-size companies office near the homes of the management / owners. Unfortunately, since the management / owners tend to be made more than the workers, the workers may not be able to afford to live near the work.

I know I've lost more than one good employee as a result of this. My solution has been to start allowing my employees to work from home a little bit. Maybe 1 or 2 days a week. It reduces stress and makes them want to keep working for me.

Great article, Alex!
Here is a quote I got from Robin Sharma...
When you were born, you were crying while the world rejoice. Make sure that when you die, the world cries while you rejoice.
Spend our limited time in this world to be the best we can be =)

Thanks for sharing this!

Great article Alex! I really like how you not only point out the problem, but also a solution for them as well.

I think wasting time is analogous to wasting money. If I have more money than I can spend, then I can spend it without any regards. However, if I have a very limited amount of money, then carelessly spending it on things that don't benefit either me or those who I care about is frivolous.

This is a fantastic list and, as advertised, it's global and does a great job of covering the different areas where we waste time.
