I think right in line with "finding a purpose" to your experience is asking yourself the following question: What did I learn from this? You will always learn something from a negative experience, and the purpose of that mini-education is using what you learned in the future to benefit you and others.

I agree with number 5 above (Set a new goal to work towards.). As long as one has a desire for a goal, you get into a state of "flow" and all negative experiences seems to diminsh in relative size.

Hi Heather: A lot of people feel the need to understand why something negative happened to them. Although it's important to learn from your mistakes, getting stuck in a spiral of asking "Why did this happen to me?" doesn't solve anything and in fact keeps you stuck in the past. In addition to the suggestions you make in your post (and I especially agree with the humor suggestion), you should ask questions that will direct your mind to thinking of positive terms, such as:
-What can I learn from this?
-What is the best way to move forward?
-What would I do from a position of a power?
-What advice would I give a loved one who finds him/herself in a similar situation?
